About the Book

In July 1917, a thirty-three-year-old Lockport, New York, papermaker named Frank Gaffney ran to the colors and enlisted in the 74th Regiment New York Infantry, National Guard. A little over a year later, as an automatic rifleman with the 27th Division’s 108th Infantry Regiment, Gaffney singlehandedly breached a section of Germany’s Hindenburg Line, coming away with 80 prisoners. Six grateful nations recognized his bravery, including his own. The United States awarded him the Medal of Honor in June 1919.

He Charged Alone is the only book to chronicle the life of a First World War American soldier whose bravery was once compared to that of the legendary Sergeant Alvin York. The book memorializes a true American hero from New York State who in life was admired by people across the country, but in death has been nearly forgotten. This work brings Frank Gaffney’s legacy back to the fore, where it belongs.

Critical Reviews

5/5 Stars --- "Whether you are a student or teacher of history, an entrepreneur, or whatever field you may belong to, you will find He Charged Alone an exceptionally helpful and insightful read." --- Literary Titan

"A truly exceptional biography that effectively rescues a World War I Medal of Honor winner from an undeserved obscurity, He Charged Alone is a very special and unreservedly recommended addition to personal, professional, community, and academic libraries." --- Midwest Book Review

"...an impeccably researched biography of one of the most decorated American soldiers in history - scrupulous, thoughtful, and immensely readable." --- IndieReader

"The story flows in a smooth and logical manner. I highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in World War I and U.S. Army combat history or stories of exceptional valor in combat." --- Terry Lloyd, Military Writer's Society of America

"Strasburg’s breezy biography ably captures Gaffney’s bravery but is somewhat short on revealing details about the man. The author ably notes Gaffney’s 'renowned sense of humor' and disinclination to fame, but his portrayal of his subject feels incomplete. Still, military buffs will find memorable information here on Pfc. Frank Gaffney." --- Kirkus Reviews
